Perez, Griffin Win Weekly ASC East Honors

RICHARDSON, TX - The University of Texas at Dallas baseball and softball teams both had players honored as the American Southwest Conference East Division Hitters of the Week for their performances in conference sweeps last week.

First baseman Mark Perez (near right) of the baseball team and shortstop Amber Griffin (far right) of the softball team both lead their teams to important ASC East wins last week. The baseball team swept Austin College to take over sole possession of first place in the division. The softball team swept doubleheaders from UT-Tyler and LeTourneau to fight its way back into a battle for a post-season berth going into the final week of the regular season

Perez, a senior from Dallas Sunset HS, hit safely in all four UTD games (including a three-game divisional sweep of Austin College) during the week. He drove in six runs while batting .466 (7-for-15). The biggest hit of Perez's week was a game-winning two-RBI single in the middle game of the weekend Austin College conference series to break a 1-1 tie on the way to a 4-1 UTD win and a sweep of the 'Roos. Perez added a pair of doubles and scored a run over the 4-0 stretch.

Griffin, a sophomore from Richmond, Texas sparked a UTD offense that scored 40 runs over a 4-0 week to get back into the ASC postseason playoff race. The Needville HS graduate added to a seven-game, multi-hit streak by going 10-for-16 (.625) with eight RBI, knocking-three doubles and stealing a pair of bases. The sophomore raised her team-best batting average to .421.
