Comets, Barnett Refuse To Lose; UTD Holds Off Concordia To Win3rd Straight
UTD 60, Concordia 53
RICHARDSON, TX - Last season, Dani Barnett was a first-team all-conference star for a Concordia-Austin team that advanced to the American Southwest Conference championship tournament for the first time in recent history.
Thursday night, she was a senior transfer who poured in 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the University of Texas at Dallas women's baskeball team to a 60-53 victory over CUA.
It was the Comets' third straight win and evened their overall record at 3-3 with a 3-2 mark in ASC play. Concordia fell to 2-4, 2-3 with the loss.
In spite of battling foul trouble all night long, Barnett logged 28 minutes and scored 15 of her points in the second half with UTD battled back from a 27-26 deficit and held on for the win. The Comets also got a 12-point, 8-rebound night from Cassi Little, who also blocked a shot.
UTD held off the Tornado in spite of hitting its last successful field goal attempt with 12:47 left in the game. The followup by Ashley Soto put UTD up by 14 (46-32) and that was enough as the Comets hit 15 free throws down the stretch and held off a late CUA charge. Concordia cut the lead down to one point at 52-51 with 5:49 still left in the game, but the Comets responded at the line and held Concordia to just one more basket the rest of the game.
The Comets dominated CUA on the boards, outrebounding the Tornados, 58-32. UTD also forced 28 CUA turnovers and had 11 steals.
