Comets Rally To Take 2 of 3 From Sul Ross
UTD Bounces Back From Opening Loss, Game 3 Deficit For Two Big Wins
ALPINE, TX - The UTD baseball team dropped its second game of the season in the opener of a three-game weekend series at Sul Ross State, but bounced back twice to take the series and improve to 7-2 on the season.
The Comets ran into a hot pitcher and could generate little offense in a 4-2 loss in the opener, but didn't have that problem again, pounding out 34 hits in a 9-0 and 14-5 victory in the final two games of the series. UTD had to rally from a 4-1 deficit in Game 3, but put together a 9-run inning in the 8th to cruise to the victory.
GAME 1: SRSU 4, UTD 2 (Boxscore)
Neither team could generate much offense in a pitching dual between UTD's Drew Waggoner and SRSU's Jaime Rojo, but the Loboes came up with the big hit with a two-run home run in the fifth. UTD had taken a 2-1 lead into the inning, but could have had more in the top of the 5th, but a base-running mistake cost them a runner before Chad Hudson's (pictured) RBI double scored just one run. Waggoner had given up just three hits before the fateful 5th. Rojo also ended up with a five-hitter, though UTD was guilty of stranding seven runners in the close game.

GAME 2: UTD 9, SRSU 0 (Boxscore)
The Comets took out their frustration of the first game loss by jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings and making a winner of pitcher Mark Cox (pictured, near right). The first two UTD batters of the game singled, then Chris Biguenet (pictured, far right) brought them all home with his second home run of the season. Biguenet drove in two more runs in the second with a double. Meanwhile, Cox allowed just six hits through seven innings and struck out seven before Brad Buchanan and Kosuke Fujiii finished up the shutout with a perfect 8th and 9th.
GAME 3: UTD 14, SRSU 5 (Boxscore)
The Comet bullpen and bats bailed out starter Brandon Dinwiddie, who was touched for five hits and three runs in just 3.0 innings of work. Jeremiah Valentine (pictured) entered the game in the third with UTD trailing 4-0 and gave up just two hits in 3.1 innings of work for his second win of the season. The UTD offense then was able to erase the deficit with an 8-hit inning in the 8th as Justen Smith and Chris Alfano both delivered 2-RBI hits.
Mike Cargile and Chase Whitehead each had three-hit games in the finale.
