Comets Top No. 5 UT-Tyler In Opener;
But Drop Another ASC East Series

UTD Pitching Can't Stop Nationally-Ranked Patriots

mugTYLER, TX - The UTD baseball team became only the sixth team to knock off nationally-ranked UT-Tyler (23-6) this season, but could not manage to top the Patriots in a weekend American Southwest Conference East Division series.

UTD won the opener, 9-7, Friday night; but lost a tight seven-inning game if the first of two Saturday, 5-3; and were blanked 7-0 in the series finale. It was UTD's fourth straight conference series loss this season as the Comets slipped to 15-13 overall and 2-10 in ASC play.

UTD , which has just six ASC East games remaining, has now been all but mathematically eliminated from its sixth straight season of qualifying for the ASC championship playoffs.

Junior second baseman Chris Biguenet (pictured above) had three home runs and a double in a 5-for-10 performance in the first two games, but was shut down like most of his teammates in the third game as UTT's Blake Booher tossed a complete game two-hitter.

GAME 1: UTD 9, UTT 7 (boxscore)

UTD ace Mark Cox improved to 6-2, but had to rely on a nice outting from reliever Adam Spinn to pick up the win. Spinn entered the game with UTD up 7-4 and allowed two more Cox baserunners to score, but he went the final three innings, surrendering just one hit and an unearned run. Biguenet and junior Jared Smith got the Comets off on the right foot, both homering in a three-run first inning for the Comets. After UTD surrendered two unearned runs in the bottom of the first to let the Patriots tie the score, Biguenet's 4th-inning double gave UTD a 6-3 lead after four. UTD got the winning runs with single runs in the 8th and 9th inning.

GAME 2: UTT 5, UTD 3 (boxscore)

The Comets' Drew Waggoner had a nice outing, but again struggled in his first inning, giving up three of seven hits he allowed all day long. Biguenet's third homer of the weekend had posted the Comets to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, but UTT answered with three in the bottom of the frame and did not let the Comets catch up. Waggoner limited the Patriots to four hits and struck out nine the rest of the way, but UTT managed to add single runs in the 2nd and 3rd inning and made the score stand up as UTD didn push another run across the plate until the top of the 7th. By then, UTD had left seven runners aboard.

GAME 3: UTT 7, UTD 0 (boxscore)

The Comets had no answer for Booher, who struck out 10 while giving up just a pair of doubles - neither of whom scored. The Patriots broke open a 0-0 game with a 4-hit, 3-run 3rd inning, then added six more in the 6th.
