UTD Knocks Off McMurry, 9-2, For 20th Win of Season

RICHARDSON, TX - The UTD baseball team has now put together a winning season in all seven years of the program after posting a 9-2 win over McMurry Tuesday afternoon at UTD Field.

UTD used a 13-hit attack and six innings of near-perfect pitching from senior Mark Cox (pictured, near right) to improve to 20-15 by knocking off McMurry (23-14), which is currently tied for the lead in the American Southwest Conference West Division. UTD, which suffered 11 of its losses in ASC East Division games, was eliminated from the post-season race last weekend. UTD hosts East Texas Baptist in its final three-game homestand this Friday and Saturday.

Cox had a no-hitter going until the 5th and 6th innings, surrendering single hits in each. By then, the Comets had put together a five-run 2nd inning to take a commanding lead. UTD batted around in the 2nd and got a big two-out bases-clearing double from Jared Smith (pictured, above right), Jeremiah Valentine and Tim Flasik were able to finish out the win, allowing just two late runs on four hits. Cox had 8 strikeouts in six innings of work.

UTD added four more runs in the 6th with a five-hit assault on two McMurry pitchers, including a Matt Kelly double and Chase Whitehead triple.
