Comets Win Final Home Series Over ETBU
UTD Rallies to Win Game 2, Tie Game 3; But Falters Late To Miss Sweep
RICHARDSON, TX - The UTD baseball team won its final home series of the season, taking two of three from East Texas Baptist. The Comets (22-16, 6-12) won the opener in impressive fashion Friday, taking a 16-2 victory. UTD then rallied with a three-run bottom of the 7th to win Game 2, 9-8; and rallied again to tie up Game 3 before falling 14-8 in the 11th inning of the finale.
GAME 1: UTD 16, ETBU 2 (boxscore)
The Comets jumped on four ETBU pitchers with a 20-hit attack, including two home runs and a double from junior Jared Smith (pictured). UTD broke open a tight game with a six-run outburst in the 3rd inning, then added four in the 6th and three more in the 8th. Drew Waggoner, who has been the Comets' hardluck starter most of the season, scattered eight hits and recorded nine strikeouts to pick up only his second win of the season. Kosuke Fujii finished the game with two innings of one-hit relief.
GAME 2: UTD 9, ETBU 2 (boxscore)
Senior Mark Cox ran into trouble in his final start in a Comet uniform, giving up 8 runs in just five innings of work. But the Comets bailed him out by scoring four runs late to take the 9-8 win and make a winner out of reliver Adam Spinn. UTD entered its last at-bat down 8-6, but three hits, a walk and a fielding error opened the door for Garet Norton's game-winning RBI single. The Comets had let ETBU build its big lead against Cox by giving up five runs in the 4th. A two-out Comet error cost UTD, but there were also two walks, two hit batters and two hits in the inning. GAME 3: ETBU 14, UTD 8 (boxscore)
The Comets again rallied in the bottom of the ninth to tie this game, but left potential winning runs in scoring position in the 9th and 10th before ETBU erupted for six runs in the top of the 11th. The Tigers had scored one run when a throwing error by pitcher Tim Flasik allowed two more to cross. ETBU then followed with a couple of walks and two singles to put the game out of reach. Senior Chase Whitehead (pictured) ended his UTD career with a 3-for-4 day with 2 RBI.
