Comets Roll Out To 2-0 Start in ASC Race

Mihai Cotet Scores Four Goals As UTD Knocks Off Concordia, UT-Tyler

mugRICHARDSON, TX - The UTD men's soccer team opened American Southwest Conference play with a dramatic overtime win over Concordia Friday, followed by an impressive 2-0 win over pre-season favorite UT-Tyler Sunday.

The Comets (4-2-0, 2-0-0) are one of four ASC teams still undefeated after the conference's opening weekend.

It was a big weekend for junior transfer Mihai Cotet (pictured). The former University of Bucharest player from Romania scored a pair of timely goals in the 3-2 overtime win over Concordia; then both UTD goals in the 2-0 win over Tyler.

Cotet (pictured) scored a pair of timely goals, including the game winner 5:48 into the first overtime period. He had previously given the Comets a 2-1 lead with 2:05 remaining in regulation on a head-over-heels bicycle kick only to see Concordia tie the game with 44 seconds left.

The Tornados (2-3-0, 0-2-0) had been outshot, 26-8, throughout the night, but got a pair of goals off free kicks following UTD fouls deep in their own territory. Justin Bailey gave UTD a 1-0 first-half lead, but CTX scored 30 minutes into the second half to tie the score.

Cotet gave the Comets the only goal they would need with a shot off a Miguel Garcia corner kick just 3:12 into the match, then added an insurance goal 19 minutes later on an serve from Jarrod Payne. The 2-0 first-half lead was tenuous, however, at the Patriots came out gunning in the second half - outshooting the Comets 17-7. UTD keeper Jake Brandon made 11 saves, seven in the second period.
