Nationally-Ranked LC Shuts Down UTD
Comets Manage Just Four Hits Against Pitching-Rich Wildcats
RICHARDSON, TX - American Southwest Conference defending champion Louisiana College improved to 19-1 and solidified its spot as the No. 6 team in the nation Friday by shutting down a UTD offense with just four hits in a 9-0 and 7-1 win.
The Comets (7-12, 1-3) could not touch LC starters Rene Schwartzenburg and McCaslin Carson, and didn't fare much better against the relievers. Schwartzenburg, who threw a no-hitter earlier in the week at LeTourneau, struck out 10 UTD batters in just five innings of work as the game was called by the "run rule" after five. Meanwhile, Jana Cain was touched by 11 hits, but only charged with five earned runs after UTD committed a costly error midway through the game.
UTD's only hit in the first game came on a leadoff dribbler to the shortstop that Amber Griffin beat to first base. The Comets did not have another baserunner in the game.
In the second game, the Wildcats edged out to a 6-0 lead against starter Heather Harydzak while UTD again struggled for offense. Tawni Ichimura legged out a bunt for a hit in the first inning, but UTD's only other runners came on an LC fielding error, a walk, a hit batter, and a Karah Brazell double before UTD finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh.
Natalie Duran singled to open the inning, advanced on an error and a stolen base, then scored on a wild pitch.
