LETU Rallies To Deny Comets Sweep

Late Home Run Ruins UTD's Chance For First Sweep of Season

LONGVIEW, TX - The UTD softball team made it through four innings of its second game of a Thursday doubleheader at LeTourneau University with everything going the Comets' way before a three-run home run ended UTD's chance at a sweep from the LadyJackets.

UTD had won the first game, 4-1, behind the five-hit pitching of senior Jana Cain (right); and had gotten three-hit pitching from sophomore Heather Harydzak on its way to 4-0 lead in the second game when LETU erupted for five runs on its way to 6-4 victory.

In the first game, UTD jumped to an early 4-0 lead by posting a pair of runs in both the 1st and 3rd innings. Tawni Ichimura drove in Amber Griffin with the first run on an RBI triple, then scored herself to post UTD to a 2-0 lead in the 1st. Griffin and Ichimura both reached on errors to open the 3rd and sored to give UTD a 4-0 lead. LETU got its only run in the 6th with back-to-back doubles against Cain, who had given up just one hit through the first five innings.

Kristen Turner and Carter Ryan each drove in runs to post UTD to another 2-0 lead in the 1st inning of Game 2. Then, three LETU errors put the Comets ahead 4-0 going into the bottom of the 5th. The inning went south quickly for Harydzak, who had given up just three hits through the first four innings. Three singles loaded the bases for a 2-RBI double, then another single set the stage for the three-run homer that put LETU in front. UTD managed just one hit in its final two innings in an attempt to catch up.
