No. 2 Wildcats Shut Down UTD Bats
Comets Held to 4 Hits In Each of Two Losses to Nationally-Ranked LC
PINEVILLE, LA - Nationally-ranked Louisiana College's pitching proved too much for the UTD softball team Tuesday, which managed just four hits in each of two losses Tuesday night.
UTD (11-20, 5-11) wasted perhaps starter Jana Cain's (pictured) best start of the season in 2-0 loss in the opener; then were "run-ruled" in the second game after six innings, 10-2.
Cain scattered five hits, struck out two and gave up just two hits in the opener, but UTD came up empty on scoring chances in three different innings. With the score still 0-0 in the 2nd, the Comets had runners at a second and third with one out, but failed to convert their best scoring chance.
LC (26-3, 11-2), ranked No. 2 in the latest national poll, got its only runs in the third with three hits from the top of the order.
Things did not go as well in Game 2. With two outs in the 1st, LC got on the board with a walk and two hits, then made it 2-0 in the 2nd when a leadoff walk scored. The Lady Wildcats blew the game open in the 3rd and 4th, pushing seven runs across behind eight hits and a pair of walks.
Amber Griffin scored UTD's first run in the third on an RBI single from Natalie Duran, then got an unearned run from Duran in the 5th, who scored on an LC error. UTD did have runners at third base in three other innings, but had one runner thrown out at home and left the other two stranded.
