Dissappointing Season Comes To End

Comets Drop 3 of 4 at Mississippi To Finish Off Season of Struggle

mugCLINTON, MS - Senior shortstop Amber Griffin ended her record-setting career with a .566 hitting streak over the final eight games, but that was about all the good news for the UTD softball team, which finished off a frustrating 12-27 season dropping three of four at Mississippi College.

UTD, which won just six of 24 American Southwest Conference East Division games, won just the second game of a Friday night doubleheader, dropping the Choctaws 12-9. Mississippi College 19-21, 9-15) won the first game of the four-game set Friday, 7-3; then swept a Saturday doubleheader 10-8 and 8-1.

Griffin finished the season with a 7-for-15 showing against Mississippi College, raising her season-ending batting average to a single-season school record of .474. In addition, the senior who started every game at shortstop during her four-year career, set new single season and career marks in a number of offensive categories.

Griffin was one of just three Comets with more than one hit in the opening loss as MC rode a big four-run 1st inning to a 7-3 win. In the UTD win, the Comet bats came to life for 16 hits, including three doubles. UTD bounced back from a 2-0 deficit with nine runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings, then capped it off with three more in the 6th on its way to the 12-9 victory.

UTD had a big start Saturday, scoring four runs in its first at-bat, but let the Choctaws answer with 10 runs before UTD rallied for four late to make the game interesting. Karah Brazell had a three-RBI triple on the final day of her Comet career.

In the finale, UTD had six hits and four walks, but only was able to scratch a single run in the first inning, stranding nine baserunners.
