ETBU Rallies Past UTD To Hold East Lead
In Match Filled With Comebacks, Comets Comes Up Just Short
RICHARDSON, TX - Maybe this is why they call it "rally" scoring. The East Texas Baptist University Lady Lions rallied from a two-game deficit Saturday night to edge the UTD volleyball team in five games, denying the Comets (9-3, 3-1) a chance to take sole possession of first place in the the American Southwest Conference East Division race.
The two teams battled for over two hours with five extremely close contests before ETBU prevailed 26-30, 29-31, 30-28, 30-27 and 17-15.
UTD had opened the weekend by winning its third divisional match in three games, 30-15, 30-17, 30-24 over Mississippi College.

The Comets got a 14-kill performance out of sophomore Patty Allen (pictured at right), who only commited two errors in 28 attacks. UTD blazed out to a 30-15 win in the first game, then handled the Lady Choctaws fairly easily again in a 30-17 win in Game 2. Freshman Stephanie Waller added 11 kills while sophomore Kat Adams contributed 22 digs on the back line.

In a night sparked by comebacks, the Comets again had and lost the lead in the decisive fifth game before Kyleigh Irish (pictured at right) put UTD in a match point situation with a 15-14 lead with a thundering spike through the ETBU defense. She then followed that shot up with a potential match-winner that just missed the back line, allowing the Lady Lions to rally and take the win.
The Comets were the comeback team early, down 25-22 in Game 1 before Waller's serving sparked an 8-point run to give UTD a 30-25 win. UTD did it again in Game 2, this time rallying from a nine-point deficit early to claim a 31-29 win. Game 3 presented much the same scenario, but this time, the Comets couldn't get any closer than a point down the stretch and allowed ETBU to stay alive. In Game 4, UTD was the team getting an early lead, only to see the Lady Lions tie things up, then push out to a 25-17 lead. UTD rallied and again got to withing 27-25 late, but could not stop ETBU's momentum.
In the fifth and deciding game, the Comets jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but ETBU answered with an 11-4 run to take charge at 11-8. UTD tied the score at 12-12 and 14-14 before Irish gave the Comets a chance to win it. ETBU finished the game and the match with a kill following one of several long rallies.
