Comets Topple Ranked Team at Emory

UTD Improves to 6-2 With Upset of #13 Rhodes, Two Other Wins

ATLANTA, GA - The UTD volleyball team had its hands full with a pair of matches against nationally-ranked teams on the opening day of the Emory Univeristy Tournament, but ended the weekend winning three of four matches.

UTD whipped #13th-ranked Rhodes College in its opener Friday, 30-28, 29-31, 32-30, 30-17; then dropped the nightcap to #5 Emory University in three games, 30-18, 30-23, 30-22. On Saturday, the Comets improved to 6-2 on the season by rebounding from two games down to beat Averette University (VA), 26-30, 32-34, 30-26, 30-11, 15-7; then handling Oglethorpe University (GA), 30-17, 30-23, 30-12.

Freshman Amber Wetz (pictured above), who finished the weekend with 48 kills, was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Comets opened the tournament with their first win of the season against a ranked team, knocking off #13 Rhodes after splitting the first two games. The key game in the match was a 32-30 win in Game 3. Kyleigh Irish (pictured near right) led the way with 15 kills while Patricia Allen (far right) added 12.

#5 EMORY def. UTD, 3-0

UTD struggled against Emory, which entered the match ranked #5 in the national pre-season poll. The Comets did manage 16 kills in a close middle game of the match (a 30-23 loss), but could not keep pace with Emory, which put down 51 kills and 11 service aces.

mugUTD def. AVERETTE, 3-2

The Comets had their hands full Saturday morning against Averette University of Virginia, but rallied after two close losses in the first two games to take the last three. UTD won Game 3 30-26, but then cruised in the final two games to take 30-11 and 15-7 wins. Wetz and Allen were both in double figures with kills while Kaley Medsger (pictured) pitched in 24 assists.

UTD def. OGLETHORPE, 3-0

UTD ended its weekend in Atlanta with a three-game sweep of Oglethorpe University (GA), winning the match 30-17, 30-23, 30-12. Wetz again finished with double-figure kills (17), connecting on .441 of her shots.
