Comets Go 3-1 at Opening Tournament
UTD Whips ASC Champ HSU After Falling to #19 Southwestern

RICHARDSON, TX - The UTD volleyball team opened its 2007 campaign at home this weekend by winning three of four matches at its own Gilbert Memorial Tournament. UTD dropped its opening match Friday, 3-1, to nationally-ranked Southwestern University; but rebounded in the nightcap to knock off defending American Southwest Conference champion Hardin-Simmons in three straight games. The Comets then had an easier time on Sunday, knocking off the University of Dallas and Fontbonne University (MO) in three games each.
Freshman Amber Wetz and sophomore Kyleigh Irish (pictured above) were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
SOUTHWESTERN def. UTD, 3-1
The new-look Comets, with 10 new players on the roster, had a tough task in their season opener, facing the 19th-ranked Southwestern Pirates. UTD hung tough, but fell 30-20 and 30-27 before finally winning their first game of the season, 31-29, in the third game. Southwestern regrouped to take the deciding match, 30-21. The Comets did have four players finish in double-figure kills, led by Wetz, who had 16 in the four-game match. BOXSCORE

Wetz again led the way as UTD avenged its ASC championship game loss last season to the Cowgirls with a 30-27, 30-23, 30-20 sweep. The freshman from San Antonio knocked down 15 of 37 attacks for kills while six others contributed to the balanced offensive attack with 29 other kills. UTD scored 10 service aces in the game as well and were helped by 12 service errors by the Cowgirls. BOXSCORE

The Comets easily handled their crosstown rivals in a 30-19, 30-17, 30-24 win Sunday morning, putting down 45 kills in the three-game match. Stephanie Waller (pictured at right) and Irish had 10 kils each. BOXSCORE

UTD continued its dominating performance on Sunday, knocking off Fontbonne, 30-20, 30-17, 30-26. The Comets emptied the bench as 14 players saw action.
UTD tallied 42 kills and had 13 service aces, led by Irish with four. BOXSCORE
