UTD Puts Clamps On Important 2nd Seed

Shutout Wins Over TLU, Schreiner Put Comets One Win Away From Bye

mugRICHARDSON, TX - The UTD women's soccer team broke a two-way tie for the important second seed in the American Southwest Conference standings Friday night with a 2-0 win over Texas Lutheran, then put themselves in position to lock up the important first-round bye in the ASC Tournament with a 5-0 blanking of Schreiner on Sunday.

UTD needs just one more win in its final two games to secure the second seed in the ASC Tournament, set for Nov. 2-4. The top two seeds in the tournament get first-round byes. (CLICK HERE for a complete look at the ASC standings.)

Senior Lyndsi Ayers (pictured) assisted on the first goal Friday against TLU, then scored the insurance goal midway through the second half. The shutouts were UTD's 11th and 12th in the last 13 games and improved the Comets' record to 10-4-3 overall and 9-1-1 in conference with just two road games remaining next weekend at East Texas Baptist and LeTourneau, who are both out of post-season contention.

After an early challenge, the Comets dominated the game offensively as it progressed, outshooting TLU 13-5 and allowing just two save opportunities for GK Andrea Jones. Meanwhile, the Comets peppered the TLU net with nine shots on the goal. Both UTD goals came on shots that lofted high over the outstretched arms of TLU goalkeeper Katie Kistner and into the net.

The Comets dominated this game even more, outshooting the Mountaineers, 27-2, and not really giving up a serious challenge on the net. UTD started a scoring frenzy late in the first half with back-to-back goals from Kristina Kinner (pictured), who had six shots on goal. Whitney Holmans, Mallorie Lamping and Emily George then rounded out the scoring.
