Comets Clamp Down On First-Round Bye
UTD Completes ASC Schedule With XX Shutouts in 13 Matches
MARSHALL/LONGVIEW, TX - The UTD women's soccer team solidified its position as the American Southwest Conference's No. 2 team this weekend, shutting down both ETBU and LeTourneau on the way for their 11th and 12th shutouts in 13 league matches.
With the solid finish, UTD (12-4-3, 11-1-1) enters its sixth consecutive ASC Championship Tournament next weekend coming off seven straight victories in which the Comets have outscored their ASC opponents, 32-0. The Comets have advanced to the ASC title game in four of their last five trips, and won the championship in 2002.
Once again, nationally-ranked Hardin-Simmons will host the tournament Nov. 2-4 in Abilene. HSU was the only ASC team to defeat the Comets, who contributed an "own goal" in that 1-0 loss. UTD did tie first-time tournament participant Texas-Tyler in a 0-0 overtime match early in the season. With a first-round bye, UTD will play its first match in the semi-finals at 2 pm Saturday against the winner of Texas-Tyler and Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The Comets got the only win they would need during the final regular season weekend by pelting ETBU from the beginning. Lyndsi Ayers scored just three minutes in off an Emily George assist, then seven other players added goals on a steady basis throughout as the Comets emptied their bench. UTD outshot the Tigers, 27-3 and forced ETBU goalkeepers to make 8 saves on additional shots on goal.
UTD capped off its regular season with yet another shutout victory, blanking LeTourneau 2-0 behind a pair of Stephanie Ross (pictured) goals. The junior forward got the game winner on a long shot just 17:53 into the game, then scored again at the 50:27 mark off a deflection from Lauren Huffman. UTD outshot the YellowJackets 31-3.
