Shane Shewmake,
who began the UT-Dallas baseball program in 2002, has developed a program
that seemingly has been able to avoid any "growing pains." Even
in its inaugural season, the team had a winning record and has now posted six straight winning seasons and played in five consecutive American Southwest Conference championship tournaments, advancing three times to the conference title game. In six seasons, Shewmake's teams have a 170-90 record (.654 winning percentage).
In 2007, UTD finished as the top seed in the ASC East Division (hosting the conference tournament), was ranked in the national Top 30 Division III poll, and earned its first invitation to the NCAA Division III West Regional tournament. The Comets, who finished with a 34-13 overall record, advanced to the tournament semifinals before being eliminated.
Shewmake earned ASC East Division Coach of the Year honors in 2004 after
his team won its first divisional championship, and was ranked as high
as #11 in the national Division III poll, finishing with a 33-8 overall
record. In just six seasons, he has coached close to 50 all-conference
players as well as a pair of Conference Newcomer of the Year and three Player
of the Year recipients.
A native of Clyde, Texas, Shewmake came to UTD after spending three and
a half years as an assistant with the successful baseball program at McMurry
University in Abilene, TX. Prior to that, he was Head Baseball Coach
at Eastfield College in Mesquite, TX from 1993-1997.
Shewmake began his college playing career at Hardin-Simmons University
in Abilene; and also played at Eastfield College and Arkansas State University.
He earned his BS degree from Arkansas State in 1992, and a Master of Science
from East Texas State University.
