Athletic Department Honors 35 Top Achievers Both On Field, In Classroom

The UTD Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored 35 of its top student-athletes Tuesday at the first annual Academic Recognition Luncheon in the Galaxy Room. The student-athletes honored all had cumulative grade point averages of 3.5 or better and were in at least their second year of participation in the program. STORY

Two Comets Selected To Attend NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum

For the first time in UTD athletic history, two student-athletes have been selected to attend the NCAA National Student-Athlete Leadership Development Conference this May in Orlando, Florida. Sophomore Tawni Ichimura, a member of the UTD women's basketball and softball teams, and junior Bruno Alonso (pictured) of UTD's championship men's soccer squad, will represent the university. STORY

Inaugural Class of Four Inducted
The first four members of the new University of Texas at Dallas Athletics Hall of Honors were inducted in an "invitation only" dinner Monday night. The four members of the inaugural class were (clockwise, beginning top left) former men's soccer player Christopher Bodie Ortega, former UTD Athletic Director Mary Walters, former women's player Cara Smedley Murez and Fred Jacoby, original commissioner of the American Southwest Conference. mugmugBaker, Lowery Earn Spots On District 6 Academic Squads
UTD's Ericka Baker and Ernie Lowery - two of the top players on their respective Comet basketball teams - have been elected to the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America)/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 teams. Both student-athletes are among the top scorers on their team and have cumulative grade point averages above 3.7. STORY

RICHARDSON, TX - Head Athletic Trainer Larry Gardner and the UTD athletic training staff have been honored as the American Southwest Conference East Division staff of the year for the second time. STORY

Thirty University of Texas at Dallas student-athletes - including 14 from the women's soccer team - have been selected as members of the American Southwest Conference Academic All-Conference team for the three fall sports. STORY

ASC Honors

The Senior UTD defender Kelli Jackson (pictured near right) was named the American Southwest Conference Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive season as the ASC released its annual pre-season coaches poll for men's and women's soccer. Sophomore volleyball player Kyleigh Irish (pictured far right) was selected as the ASC East Division's Pre-Season Player of the Year. The Comet volleyball team was chosen as co-favorite in the ASC East Division race. The UTD women's soccer team was chosen to finish second in the ASC race while the men's soccer team was picked sixth in the poll.

Former Comets Join Coaching Staff

Three former UTD student-athletes have joined the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as assistant coaches. Katie Johnson and Jason Hirsch, who played soccer for UTD until 2004, have been hired as assistant soccer/tennis coaches. Sarah Arldt, a 2005 graduate who served as a graduate assistant coach last season, is now an assistant softball coach and head coach for the women's cross country team. STORY

was named the ASC East Division Men's Player of the Week after helping the Comets clinch another post-season berth. STORY

Amber Griffin (Softball) was named the ASC East Division Hitter of the Week after a big week at the plate. STORY

Mark Cox (Baseball)
was named the ASC East Division Pitcher of the Week after throwing the first no-hitter in program history in a 2-0 win over Howard Payne. STORY

Juston Festervand (Baseball)
was named the ASC East Division Hitter of the Week after nailing four homeruns and driving in 15 runs in UTD's 3-1 start to the season. STORY

Chelsea Edwards (Women's Basketball)
was named the ASC East Division Player of the Week after a 37-point, 18-rebound effort in a weekend split of divisional games. STORY

Jimmy Witten (Men's Basketball)
was named the ASC East Division Player of
the Week after a 19-point,
8-rebound performance against Austin College.

Jenise Langston (Women's Basketball)
was named the East Division Player of the Week after leading the Comets in scoring four of the team's first five games. STORY

Amber Wetz & Kat Adams (Volleyball)
became multiple winners of the ASC East Division Player of the Week awards. Wetz is a two-time Offensive POW while Adams won the Defensive award for the third time. STORY

Charles Williams (Cross Country)
was named the ASC Male Runner of the Week after leading the Comets to a third-place finish at the Northwood University Invitational. STORY

Lyndsi Ayers (Women's Soccer)
was the co-winner of the ASC Defensive Player of the Week after UTD held two opponents to just seven shots, then got an assist and a goal in an important showdown with Texas Lutheran University. STORY

Patty Allen & Kat Adams (Volleyball)
were named the ASC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week following impressive performances at the ASC Crossover Tournament. STORY

Kevin White (Men's Soccer)
was named the ASC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for two consecutive weeks after scoring three timely goals one week, then tying a school and conference record with a four-goal game the next week. STORY

Kelli Jackson (Women's Soccer) was named the ASC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week as UTD extended its shutout streak and picked up a pair of road wins. STORY

Mihai Cotet (Men's Soccer)
was named the ASC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week after scoring four goals - including both game winners - in UTD's 2-0 start in ASC action. STORY

Amber Wetz & Kat Adams (Volleyball) were named the ASC East Division Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week after UTD's conference-opening win over Mary Hardin-Baylor. STORY

Kaley Medsger (Volleyball) was named ASC East Division Offensive Player of the Week after recording 77 assists in a four-match weekend at the UTD Gilbert Tournament. STORY
