Zach Villarreal joined the UTD staff in 2004 as an assistant coach for the Comets' volleyball program, and is primarily responsible for working with the team's setters to design the team's offensive system. He also assists with the UTD sports information program.

Villarreal was reunited with Head Coach Marci Sanders, who he coached with as a graduate assistant at Angelo State University (ASU) in San Angelo, Texas; and was part of the ASU staff rom 1998-2002. In 2003-04, Villarreal was an assistant volleyball and soccer coach at Cleburne (TX) High School, where he also taught mathematics. His CHS junior varsity team finished with an 18-10 record, best in the district.

A native of San Antonio, Villarreal earned his BS degree in kinesiology from ASU in 2000, and master's degree in 2002. He developed an interest in competitive volleyball while playing on a rec team in high school. He has continued to work with several club and recreational volleyball teams throughout the area and is currently involved in the North Texas Region Junior Olympic Volleyball Program with Club Kahuna. He is IMPACT certified.
