RICHARDSON, TEXAS (10.29.09) – The UT Dallas men's soccer team's late-season offensive woes have certainly cost the Comets a chance at the post-season. UT-Tyler shut down the Comets for the third straight game, running away with a 3-0 win that sealed UTD's fate for the 2009 season.
Tyler got a pair of first-half goals in a six-minute span between 27:40 and 33:47 to take a 2-0 halftime lead, then added another goal at the 69:07 mark. It was more than enough as the Comets couldn't convert on any of 13 shots, five of which were saved by Patriot goalkeeper Mark Oliphant.
UTD managed just three first-half shots and were outdone 13-11 by the end of the game. UTD's only hope came on a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks, but the Comets could not force any of those in the net.
The loss dropped the Comets (now 8-7-3) to 5-4-3 in the ASC and into 9th place. Only the top six teams in the ASC's regular season standings qualify and the Comets have just one more conference game Saturday against Concordia. The win kept the post-season hopes alive for the Patriots, who are in 7th place at 6-7-3, 6-3-3.
This marks the first time in the last eight seasons that the Comets, who finish up their season Saturday at home against Concordia, have failed to qualify for the post-season.
