UTD Slugger Earns First-Team Spot; Jared Smith Third-Team Selection
RICHARDSON, TX (05.10.09) – UT Dallas baseball standout Cody Ross has been voted as a first-team selection on d3baseball.com's 2009 All-America Team at third base.

Ross, a senior from Austin Bowie HS, was recently named the American Southwest Conference's East Division Player of the Year after leading the Comets to a 28-18 season and a trip to semifinals of the ASC Championship Tournament.

In addition to Ross, UTD senior outfielder Jared Smith, was named a third-team selection to the national honor squad.

Ross and Smith were also named to spots on the national American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-American team, both winning second-team honors.

Ross, a senior transfer from Wharton County Junior College who began his collegiate career at Texas State University, led the Comets with a .439 batting average and was second in Division III nationally with 87 hits. Ross had 67 runs batted in while knocking 39 extra-base hits for an .803 slugging percentage. The Austin Bowie HS product scored a team-hit 64 runs during a season where the Comets averaged almost 10 runs per game.

He was one of three ASC players on the first-team squad, which included Sul Ross State shortstop Javier Arrieta and Mississippi College outfielder Bo Bell.

Smith, a senior from New Caney, Texas, was another first-team All-ASC East Division selection for the Comets after leading the Division III national membership in home runs for much of the season and finishing the year in second place with 23, a new school single-season record. Smith hit .369 overall while knocking 21 doubles and leading the team with 71 RBI. He finished the season with an team-best .821 slugging percentage.
